Safe water

Family Wells

The
Need

Almost half of the households in Tanzania don’t have access to safe water. Four out of ten households must travel an hour or more just to collect water.

The mother or older children of Tanzanian families are responsible for seeking water for their daily needs, of drinking, cooking and hygiene. They will have to walk several kilometers to get water. Many water sources are highly contaminated and are often shared with animals or farming. Another option might be government water sources however, these prove to be unreliable and expensive to buy the water.

In parts of the Moshi Diocese, water is less than 50 feet deep. Our well-drilling team work with very poor, rural families to drill a well. The cost of a well, approximately $300USD, exceeds the monthly income of many families. Yet, a qualitied family receiving a well, contributes towards the pump supplies and technical labor, which can run up to a third of the cost of the well.

Over 250 wells have been completed since 2022.

Will you help?

Please donate towards a Family well.

Partnering with a Tanzanian family to create a safe water well benefits not only that family, but an average of five neighboring families, impacting 25-40 individuals. Ten wells serve an average of fifty families, impacting 50-80 family members. Each well establishes a community around it, bringing families together to build and define their community. Having access to a family well allows more time to tend to a garden that will produce food for the family, or it allows the mother time to make or sell items at the local market to produce income for the family. .

Please consider donating to the Family Wells Program and bring safe water to a family that grows into a community.

Heartwarming success stories

We don’t always know the extent to which a well with a simple plastic hand pump can impact a family or community in Tanzania. But sometimes such compelling stories emerge from interviews with well owners that we want to share them with you.
